Digital Badges The New Wave of Student Recognition

It is possible that digital education badges will become part of the new wave of student recognition.   The MacArthur foundation says it’s “a validated indicator of accomplishment,skill, quality or interest,” there are various sources that describe the system of badging as something more important.  The Chronicle of Higher Education says that these badges are based on  core competencies—”systems thinking,” for example. Badging is designed to evidence that students have received  formal and informal learning, from within traditional higher education. Read more

Teaching Emotional Teens

One of the hardest things to do is teach emotional teens.  Linked in has a great resource created by Daniel Goleman who is the Co-Director of Consortium for Research on Emotional Intelligence in Organizations.  All classroom teachers know the difficulties that ensue when students are uncooperative or emotional.   In his post, Goleman discusses the difficulty of tackling the personal and social challenges of students in this specific age group.  Teachers can benefit from using his recommendations as they work to help summer-school students and as they work with this age group on a daily basis during the school year. Flipboard Can Help Teachers Create a Class Magazine

The Flipboard app can help teachers to create a class magazine and so much more.  In recent article in the Los Angeles Times, Salvadore Rodrigues discussed the latest addition to the app that allows users to create a magazines for an individual user based on their social networks and the publications they follow.  He also mentions great ways that teachers can use this same app to create other projects as well.  The articles in Flipboard are easy to understand and have lots of visuals that allow readers to link to.  This format is very well suited to student use and there are many interesting genres of topics to allow students to read. Larry Page’s Vision of technology can motivate Students

Larry Page’s vision of technology can help teachers to motivate students to become the game changers of the future.  Page, Google Inc. Chief Executive,  did not sell Google technology in his Google I/O 2013 keynote speech , he sold a vision of a world where technology is the tool that can help us free up time.  He also talked about the need for the tech industry to spread the best technology to everyone else.  Wired Magazine, indicated in a recent article that Page wants an army of tech-savvy people to help him transform, not just Silicon Valley, but every industry – from automobiles to healthcare – and every institution – from law to education. Teacher Pay is Victim to the Recession

There’s no doubt that the recession has had a negative impact on teacher pay. In a recent study by the National Council on Teacher Quality the results demonstrated that while the methods districts chose varied, nearly every district in there was a slowed the pace of teacher salary growth in response to the economic downturn.  Many districts have used step freezes, annual adjustment freezes or other methods to reduce or negate advancement in teacher pay. 2013 Teacher of the Year is all about Engineering

This past Thursday the Department of Education announced the 2013 Teacher of the Year.  This year the Teacher of the Year is all about science and Engineering coursework.  Jeff Charbonneau from Zillah High School in Washington state teaches chemistry, physics, and engineering.  He also works to create accessible, interactive lessons that help convince kids that the science classes most students consider hardest are worth diving into.  President Obama thanked Jeff and his fellow educators for their hard work and commitment to America’s young people.
